Optimising Your Electric Vans Battery Life

January 5th, 2022

You may not realise it but there are actually quite a few ways that you can optimise the range of your electric van, not just when you’re behind the wheel but also and when you’re not. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a few of these pointers so you’ll be able to get more miles from a single charge and optimise your electric vans battery life.

Be aware of your speed

In a petrol or diesel van, 50mph is the optimal speed for efficiency. However, in an electric van, things work slightly differently. By this we mean, the speedier you drive, the more energy you will consume.  The most efficient speed for electric vans is said to be around 10mph depending on other factors, for example, air conditioning usage and heating.

Re-gen braking

Driving an electric van might feel a little out of your domain if you’re not used to an electric vehicle. It may also feel like a bit of a challenge going a period of time without touching the brakes.

If you only decelerate using regenerative braking, this means that you are minimising energy consumption. Be sure you always have regenerative braking on and that you make sure there is efficient space for it to slow you down before you need to brake, this is a safety consideration too.

Climate control and heating

Most people are aware of this as it’s the same with any vehicle but turning down your climate control or heating will lower your overall static energy consumption. This is something really simple but that can make a huge difference.

Be selective with your route

This isn’t always going to be something you can do and you might not necessarily have a choice in your journey. However, taking a route that is a bit more direct, but will likely call for traveling at a lower speed. This in turn will mean that you can travel further.

Another point to consider is that if you can avoid hills on your journey, you will improve your range. Although it goes without saying that you clearly can’t alter the altitude, it’s just a point to consider.

If you’re unsure about whether or not an electric van is right for you, we recommend getting in touch with your local electric van specialists to help you weigh up the pros and cons.
