4 Van Tips for Your Next Festival

April 6th, 2023

If you’re an avid music fan, a vanlife fanatic, or even just enjoy a weekend away with your friends, chances are visiting a festival has crossed your mind. While festivals themselves are often great fun, many of us are – understandably – put off by the thought of sleeping in a cold, boggy field for several nights.

The solution to this common conundrum? Taking your van! Here are some top tips you’ll need to bear in mind if you plan on taking a van to your next festival.

Book well in advance

Most festivals are incredibly popular, whether it’s a world-famous music festival like Glastonbury or a more low-key vanlife festival like BusFest. As such, tickets and parking bays in the van camping areas often sell out very quickly.

With this in mind, it’s worth planning your trip well in advance to avoid disappointment. For some festivals, you may need to book up to a year before, whereas others will need just a few months of advance planning.

Beware of additional fees

Most festivals will require those bringing their van to purchase an additional ticket in order to park in the van camping site – you can’t just rock up to the main carpark and camp there. Again, these tickets will likely need booking in advance, so take care to be on the ball when it comes to securing both your standard entry ticket and your camping ticket.

Arrive early

This is not so much a requirement but a recommendation. On the whole, the earlier you arrive at a festival the better. This not only gives you first pick of the parking spaces but gives you the time and space you need to get set up without having to worry about missing anything.

Be sure to take into consideration the amenities you require before choosing your camping spot. For instance, if your van isn’t fitted with a toilet and/or shower, you may want to park up near the ones provided by the festival.

Stock up on supplies

Anyone who has visited a festival will know what a nightmare the queues can be – not only for the basics like toilets and showers, but for things like food and drink too. One of the benefits of having an entire van at your disposal is that you’ll have plenty of space for supplies – and more affordable ones at that!

Therefore, make sure you stock up on food, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks (if that’s your thing) and toiletries before arriving at the festival. If you plan to do a quick supermarket run on your way to the festival, it’s worth reading up on the festival’s rules about what you can and cannot bring in with you.
