Citroen Relay Tipper vs Citroen E-Relay Tipper
January 24th, 2023

So, you’ve found yourself on a quest for practicality, comfort, reliability and efficiency, all rolled into one van? Some may say this is asking too much, but we disagree. As the commercial vehicle market outdoes itself year after year, there are some breathtakingly brilliant vans on the road. Among these, is the Citroen Relay Tipper. This van offers high-performance capabilities, a hardwearing design and powerful electro-hydraulic tipping functionality.

A few years back, this would have been a simple choice for those on the hunt for a great tipper. However, as we take strides towards a sustainable future, there’s a new van on the block, Citroen’s all-electric E-Relay Tipper.

Boasting the same comfort, practicality and tipping functions as its diesel counterpart, the E-Relay Tipper offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional combustion engines, ideal for light, local construction and urban navigation.

To make life easy, we’ve put together a van vs van comparison for the Citroen Relay Tipper and its zero-emission sibling.

Read on to discover how these vans compare in terms of engine, specifications, interior and practicality.

Engines and Spec

It’s tricky knowing where to start with two brilliant vehicles such as these, but the engine and battery seem a logical choice.

Below the bonnet of the Citroen Relay Tipper, you’ll find a 2.2-litre diesel engine, connected to a manual transmission. This provides around 165bhp, which lends itself nicely to handling heavier cargo. Additionally, the new HDi diesel engine is much more efficient than older models, producing fewer emissions and offering improved fuel economy.

Taking a look at this van’s load capabilities, we’re sure you’ll be as impressed as we were. The tipper bed offers 1222 kg of payload, with a 2870mm x 2026mm area. This impressive load capability combined with the high-performance tipping mechanism powered by an electro-hydraulic power pack is what gives the tipper a class-leading advantage over its competitors.

So, how does the E-Relay Tipper compare? Before we dive in, it’s worth noting that the E-Relay exists as an official third-party conversion, courtesy of BEDEO. We know what you’re thinking, but don’t worry, BEDEO are the conversion experts; the E-Relay is well-designed and beautifully engineered.

Making good use of a 74kWh battery pack, the E-Relay Tipper has an impressive 154-mile range on a single charge. There’s no denying the E-Relay is a great choice for stop-start driving, built-up urban environments and short trips to and from the site.

In terms of loadspace, the tipper features the same area as its diesel counterpart, with a marginally lower payload owing to the electric output. That said, 1150 kg is nothing to sniff at.

Interior

Inside the cab, both the Relay and E-Relay boast a plethora of safety, comfort and tech features, ensuring that the driver and passengers are comfortable at all times. With three seats, lumbar support, front door armrests and non-slip floor coverings, it’s clear that the Relay is built to last.

Alongside the well-designed seating and storage, the cab also features a number of technical features such as Bluetooth connectivity,  a digital radio, air conditioning and multiple speakers. The cab is also fitted with central locking, an immobiliser and alarm lights.

The E-Relay boasts an almost identical interior, with slight modifications to display electric functionality and information. Tipping capabilities are also controlled from the cabs of both vans, with an easy-to-use remote and clear rear visibility.

The Verdict

For individuals, businesses and tradies alike, Citroen’s Relay Tipper models are excellent working vans. Boasting practicality, comfort, durability and reliability, you’d be hard-pressed to find any major faults with either. But, the question remains… should you choose the Relay Tipper or the E-Relay Tipper?

We’re sure you’ve guessed, but there is no sure answer. Both vans are well-designed, with safety, tech and tipping capabilities all beautifully integrated. If you’re looking for a slightly higher payload or greater range, the diesel Relay might just be the one. On the other hand, if efficiency, low running costs and sustainability are priorities, the E-Relay is a perfect choice. Whichever you choose, you’ll be behind the wheel of an incredible vehicle that is sure to serve you and your professional needs.
