Fiat E-Ducato Tipper vs Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper

March 31st, 2023

Let’s be honest, when it comes to modern commercial vehicles, the word ‘practical’ gets thrown around an awful lot. What’s more, those on the hunt for a real workhorse van are sure to be bombarded with promises regarding reliability and capability, but what does this actually mean? Here at Van Sales UK, we believe in transparency and clarity to help our customers find the perfect vehicle for their needs. When we say a van is practical, reliable and oh-so capable, you can be certain that we mean it!

Speaking of which, when it comes to manual trades and transportation, nothing matters more than a good payload, a functional storage space and a comfortable cab. Professionals on the lookout for all of the above should most definitely turn their attention to a tipper. If a user-friendly tipper bed, high-quality cab layout and ultra efficient electric drive chain sounds like your cup of tea, this article is sure to be of use.

As businesses shift their focus to sustainability and efficiency, it’s no wonder that all-electric vehicles are slowly becoming the norm worldwide. If you’re looking to upgrade your vehicle and reduce running costs, an electric van could be the perfect solution.

In the following review, we’re putting two impressive electric tipper vans head to head in an attempt to discover which is best. Read on to hear our thoughts on the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper and the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper.

Engines and Spec

Let’s kick things off with a look at the driving forces behind each van. As you may have guessed, neither the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper nor the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper has an engine. Instead, these nifty vehicles utilise batteries and motors. So, how do these all- electric components compare?

Fiat’s E-Ducato Tipper is sold with a choice of 47kWh and 79kWh batteries. While both are capable, those hoping to retain torque and manoeuvrability with a full tipper-load would be better off with the larger version. That said, if speedy charging is your number one concern, the 47kWh battery can be charged to 100% at home in as little as five and a half hours.

In terms of range, the 79kWh Fiat E-Ducato Tipper is capable of around 175 miles on a single charge. This is seriously impressive for an electric van and makes it ideal for both city driving and longer trips. Of course, this figure varies depending on the load being transported and driving efficiency.

There’s no denying that the zippy engine and sizable battery make the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper a force to be reckoned with. That said, let’s take a look below the bonnet of the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper.

As is the case with the E-Ducato, the eSprinter also offers a choice of batteries, though they are slightly smaller. With 41kWh or 55kWh models, Mercedes have placed their emphasis on efficiency and charge speed rather than torque and range. A max range of 100km certainly doesn’t compare to the E-Ducato, but this van is perfectly suited to shorter trips and urban driving. That said, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper can reach 80% charge in as little as two hours at home and 30 minutes when using a fast-charge point! This speed is certainly a redeeming factor.

Of course, both vans offer high-quality tipper functionality and load capacity, ideal for those looking to transport building materials, debris, green waste and bulky supplies.

Interior

With a better understanding of each van’s battery, range and charging specifications, let’s step inside the cabs. Both the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper  and the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper feature well-designed interiors, complete with a number of tech, comfort and safety features.

Although Fiat are known for functional designs, their comfortable cabs should not be overlooked. Supportive seating, plentiful storage and an ergonomic layout make the E-Ducato a great choice for professionals on the move. What’s more, a touchscreen infotainment system means that navigation, music and communications are safe and accessible.

Though the E-Ducato is a noble competitor, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is renowned for its stylish and comfortable cab. With a choice between single cab and crew seating, there’s plenty of room for small and larger teams. What’s more, an infotainment system, geocoded mapping and voice control features make it a pleasure to drive. Noisy road? Simply switch on the silent cab mode to reduce in-cab engine noise!

The Verdict

There is no denying that both the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper and the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper are well-engineered and comfortable commercial vehicles. With an abundance of in-cab additions, tech and safety features, both provide a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

There is no straight answer to the question ‘which is best?’, so it really depends on individual requirements and personal preferences. Those after incredibly swift charging times may find that the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper is a better choice, whereas those in need of extended range should certainly choose the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper.
