First Look at the New Ford Ranger

January 27th, 2022

The Ford Ranger isn’t the UK’s favourite pick-up truck for no reason. With previous models outperforming its competitors in powertrain, loadspace and safety, as well as overall driver and passenger comfort – It looks like Ford will continue to improve on its iconic pick-up truck.

If you’re interested in the 2022 Ford Ranger, here’s what you need to know.

What’s new?

Visually, the new Ford Ranger has a broader stance being 50mm wider, which you’ll notice by the larger radiator grille with the Ford badge and new ‘C-clamp’ daytime running lights. You’ll also notice more pronounced wheel arches and an integrated step on both sides of the rear bumper – improving access into the loadbed.

The 2022 Ford Ranger will be available with an electrified drivetrain as well as new five- and six-speed manual gearboxes to help improve towing capabilities at lower revs. You’ll be able to enjoy an electronic parking brake designed to gain more driver assistance systems and the gearshift itself will be a short-throw ‘e-shifter’.

The Ford Ranger 2022 incorporates a fully digital instrument cluster able to adapt its display for the six new driving modes. When off-roading, a touchscreen includes data on the driveline, steering angle, vehicle pitch and roll angles to make your drive much more seamless.

The loadbed now comes with even more features that make your job easier. It includes clamps built into the tailgate to offer a mobile workbench for holding materials while cutting. The addition of plastic capping on the loadbed edges means you can avoid damage to the body as well as hiding structural anchoring points for the attachment of canopies or covers.

What features are staying the same?

The new Ford Ranger will be keeping the current 2.0-litre diesel engine from the older model and it will remain similar in the 2022 Ford Ranger. However, Ford will be adding a 3.0 litre diesel V6, that has yet to be detailed, but will likely trump the 210bhp and 317lb ft of torque you can get on the most powerful Ranger already.

However, Ford will be offering two different versions of four-wheel drive in the new Ranger. This will provide a basic system with manual selection of four-wheel-drive mode as well as a more advanced on-demand system. Recognising what customers were looking for in the old Ford Ranger, the new model will distribute the torque between the front and rear axles when the customer demands, allowing for a smarter and more intelligent drive. This will work in all conditions, whether towing on grass, gravel, ice or snow.
