The Ford e-Transit Van at a glance

The Ford Transit is a family of light commercial vehicles that first hit the market in 1965. An incredibly popular van, it has gone through four generations and numerous facelifts over the years, with over 8 million Transit vans sold over the years. The Transit brand is thriving, with the Ford Transit Custom produced since 2012 and the Ford Transit Trail coming out soon for those needing an off-road motorhome.

In Europe, the Ford Transit has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle for over 40 years and in 2020 Ford marked this success with the announcement of the Ford e-Transit Van. This all-electric vehicle has already taken the world by storm, racking up various awards such as the What Car? Van of the Year in 2022 and already surpassing 10,000 orders upon release in February 2022.

The e-Transit is available in various body types, such as a dropside, tipper and a Luton van, making it an incredibly versatile vehicle that is great for whatever purpose your business needs it for. However, for the sake of this review, we’ll be sticking with the classic Ford e-Transit Panel Van, highlighting the best features and the vehicle’s performance.

Engines and Spec

The liquid-cooled traction 400-volt battery is sourced from the Mustang Mach-E, with maximum charging speeds of 11.3 kW (AC) or 115 kW (DC). In just half an hour you can get your electric van charged up and ready to hit the road again, with a convenient charging socket behind the front grille. The battery can give an impressive range of up to nearly 200 miles on a full charge, meaning you can drive for a long period of time without thinking about stopping for a recharge.

You can shop for a choice of two traction outputs of 181 or 265 hp, with an EcoMode available. The engine produces zero emissions while driving, while also being able to transport a large number of items, with up to a 1758kg max gross payload and 15.1 cubic metres of cargo space. While it is fitted with the same body as the traditional Transit, it has a unique chassis to help accommodate the traction battery between the frame rails.

The Ford EcoMode setting lets you drive more efficiently, assessing your driving behaviour and its impact on your fuel consumption. It does this by analysing your speed, braking, gear shifts and journey lengths. Selectable Drive Modes allow you to optimise performance in certain conditions, such as a slippery mode for improved handling in wet or icy conditions.

The Ford e-Transit is a highly customisable vehicle, available in over 25 combinations. You can adjust the height, length, wheelbase and chassis preparations. This means you can get a van suitable for whatever your business needs, whether you’re carrying large, irregular loads or heavy, bulky items.

Interior

The digital information display on the dashboard is easy to read and also features an electronic screen to offer you key insights into your vehicle. The interior is designed to be streamlined and simple, with a traditional gear shift replaced with a rotary gear shifter for less clutter. Space is further freed up with the electric parking brake being a simple switch.

Stay connected with the Ford SYNC 4 infotainment system, which provides you with a satnav, radio, Bluetooth connectivity and much more. If you are a workman who needs to charge his tools frequently, you can power them on board with a Pro Power socket installed.

There is plenty of storage in the van, so you have space for everything you may need, allowing you to work anywhere. The two seats in the front are comfortable and provide plenty of room, so the driver and passenger feel like they’re driving in style and not cramped up.
