Ford Transit Tipper Review

April 28th, 2023

The Ford Transit Tipper at a glance

Over the past four decades, the Ford Transit has made a name for itself as the third best-selling van of all time. Its long reign as one of the world’s most celebrated van models can be pinned to its consistent principles of quality, durability and versatility – principles that have not budged after four different generations. In particular, the Tipper model is designed to make transporting and unloading particularly heavy goods a breeze, making it ideally suited to a range of commercial applications.

The tipper van design consists of an underfloor tipping system that allows you to tip the vehicle body and unload heavy goods at its rear. With this capability, they make the unloading process significantly more efficient – expending far less manpower and time. For this reason, tipper vans are a popular choice for landscapers, groundworkers, bricklayers, refuse collectors and other professions wherein bulky equipment or materials need to be offloaded safely and quickly.

With a facelift in 2020 that saw a redesign of the dashboard and a new choice of engines, the Ford Transit Tipper is proving that it can still keep up to speed with its more contemporary rivals – even after 58 years on the market. To find out more about how this trusty vehicle can benefit your business operations, keep reading.

Engines and Spec

Beneath the bonnet of the Transit Tipper, users are met with a 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine – a motor that boasts 13% more efficiency than the preceding 2.2-litre engine. This is great news for businesses who are attempting to prioritise sustainability in their operations – particularly those who rack up significant mileage by dashing about from job to job. Moreover, with the Transit’s top-end model hitting an impressive power output of 185hp, performing zippy manoeuvres in congested urban spaces whilst carrying heavy loads is easily achievable.

On the subject of heavy loading, tradespeople who frequently have to transport bulky equipment or materials will be pleased to know that the single cab Transit Tipper racks up a generous payload rating of 1,023kg. More recent models make use of a unibody chassis as opposed to a separate frame, allowing for a stronger and more secure load space for hauling heavy goods. The space comes complete with sections to attach straps that will add that extra level of security when transporting – ideal if you’re moving fragile items from A to B.

Interior

The Ford Transit reflects the design of Ford passenger cars along with some familiar switchgear dropped in. Ford has improved on the toughness of the plastics which gives a more durable feel to the interior and ensures it will last. The Transit’s standard 4-inch central display screen helps you to manage functions, although it is on the smaller side. Some may opt for the larger 8-inch touchscreen which runs with Ford SYNC 3 software and Bluetooth capabilities. FordPass Connect provides wi-fi, live traffic information, vehicle status and remote locking via your smartphone.

There is plenty of storage to stow away small items, though space for anything larger is a little lacking. However, there is a bin under the passenger seat that can hold bulkier items and this is concealed out of sight. Both seats are quite comfortable and the driver’s seat is very spacious. Drivers who often find themselves on the road for long stretches won’t find themselves becoming uncomfortable in a hurry.

The Verdict

With a powerful yet efficient engine, well-thought out interior and strong payload ratings, the reasons behind the Ford Transit’s lasting popularity are glaringly obvious. The tipper model in particular provides a highly reliable commercial vehicle experience – capable of transporting and unloading heavy cargo with ease, whilst still seamlessly manoeuvring through urban environments and on motorways. The refined tipper design means that, for construction workers and refuse collectors, swiftly and efficiently unloading hefty loads has never been more simple.
