Engines and Spec

Few people would argue that in recent years, the car manufacturing world has taken huge strides forward with electric vehicles. Even our vans can be purchased with either an electric motor or a traditional diesel engine. This advancement in technology has now caused a slight conundrum for those in the market for a van. Which is best, the electric model or the diesel? Of course, this will come down to a variety of different personal circumstances, but hopefully, this guide can set you on the right path to making an informed decision.

The Ford Transit is iconic. We’re sure that nobody would argue with us on that front. After all, the vehicle is clearly one of the leading vans in the world and sits on the bestsellers’ list every year without fail. Nowadays, people have the option of either an electric model or a diesel option and both of them are commendable options. So, why would you choose one over the other?

Naturally, there are a few circumstantial factors that come into play when choosing the right van for you. One of these is, of course, is your location. If you live in the countryside and often need to carry large loads of waste or building materials to and from the site then a tipper is the right choice for you. This high payload and cargo area will allow you to transport huge loads with ease and quickly drop them off at the site. The ford transit tipper is arguably one of the best tippers on the market, with the diesel option boasting an impressive 2,960kg payload.

The diesel option may also have a few other benefits for those of you that live in the more rural parts of the country. The range in these vans is far more than the electric alternative and this may prove handy in spots off the beaten track. After all, there are far fewer electric charging points in these areas of the country, so you may struggle with charging.

The electric tipper does have its uses though. Take city driving, for example. If you carry out a lot of jobs within the city, then the electric model of the transit tipper is arguably your best bet. After all, they’re incredibly cheap to run and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to charging points.

In terms of power, the petrol variant has a generous 170 hp engine and 415 nm of torque. However, you should consider that electric motors are extremely powerful so don’t rule the e-Transit out!

Interior

In both the electric model and the diesel option, you certainly won’t be disappointed with the interior. Ford has been making the transit for many years and they know what the average van user needs. There is plenty of secure storage in the vans and the driving position really is second to none. These vans are built to last though, so don’t expect flashy materials or intricate design. However, they are workhorses and will definitely serve you well. There are a few differences between the two though. So, what are they?

The most notable difference is centred around the dashboard’s central display. Both models come with a small display unit which can be used to show directions or play music through the vehicle’s speaker systems. However, the standard diesel option only comes with a 4-inch display, whereas the electric model features a 12-inch screen. This may prove incredibly handy if you’re used to driving small routes through the city, as your directions will be clearly visible.

The Verdict/Snap shot

Naturally, when it comes to running costs and efficiency, the electric model wins comfortably. The electric motor can be charged using your mains power in your home or one of the charging points dotted around the country. What’s more, electric vehicles are exempt from road tax until 2025, so that’s another saving you’ll benefit from!

Of course, there are pros and cons for both models, but the main thing is both of these options are incredibly capable and it simply comes down to what you will be using the van for. As we’ve already discussed, city drivers will naturally gravitate toward the electric model for its convenience and cheaper dunning costs. However, they will be sacrificing the payload capacity.
