MAN eTGE Electric Van Review

MAN eTGE Van Review
November 24th, 2022

The MAN eTGE Van at a glance

Whilst it is new for 2022, the MAN eTGE van is paving the way for the future of vans.

Operating with a fully electric engine, the MAN eTGE scores a hatrick when it comes to convenience – offering you comfort with a quiet drive, practicality with no compromise on cargo space capacity and environmental consideration thanks to its zero emissions. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the benefits the eTGE has to offer.

There are three charging options available to ensure that you can stay mobile everywhere in the eTGE van, with standard AC wallbox charging at home and DC charging at charging stations; there is also an extra AC charging option using a conventional 230 V socket, ideal for when you need that extra bit of juice and haven’t got access to a charging station.

What about when you’re on the road and need to stop to charge your van, where is the nearest charging station? No need to worry if you don’t know – the eTGE comes with a standard on-board navigation system, showing you the closest charging system to your current location.

The eTGE is also available in a number of bodies, including panel, box, tipper, platform and crew, so you can choose the eTGE to suit your needs.

Engines and Spec

The MAN eTGE operates on a fully electric motor, making it emission free. Of course, just like a fuel powered vehicle requires filling up at a petrol station, the eTGE requires charging in order to have the power to drive. As we’ve mentioned already, this can be done at a DC charging station, using an AC wallbox (which will fully charge it in just five and a half hours) or even using a 23 V socket (which can fully charge it in nine hours).

Once charged, the eTGE has a highly impressive range. Numerous studies have shown that people driving in urban areas complete a daily average mileage of 37-50 miles (60-80 km); the MAN eTGE effortlessly handles this, achieving a range of 68-71 miles (110-115 km). It is worth noting, however, that this is subject to certain factors (i.e. average speed range, terrain, load, use of auxiliary consumers etc.).

Being an electric vehicle, the MAN eTGE also generates new electricity when coasting to increase your driving range. Through recuperation, each time your vehicle is coasting the kinetic energy is converted back to electric energy and flows back into the battery, rather than being dissipated (as it is in petrol and diesel vehicles).

As for your loading concerns, fear not, for the eTGE does not compromise on cargo space. With up to 10.7 m3, it has the same transport capacity as a standard MAN TGE panel van with rear drive and high roof. In terms of payload for other bodies, both the box and tipper models have a payload up to 750 kg, while the platform has a payload up to 820kg.

Interior

If comfort is as important to you as having a low environmental impact, then you’re in luck, because the MAN eTGE offers both. The cabin area is practically made, stylish and comfortable.

The analogue cockpit is large and clear to see, with a small  digital screen between the dials that displays your speed clearly, along with other information. The centre display console includes a digital infotainment system, which also has an inbuilt navigation system that is included as a standard on all eTGE vans.

There is ample storage space in the cabin area, with overhead bins, generously-sized cup holders and dashtop cubbies.

Being spacious and comfortable as it is, if you are looking for even more comfort whilst driving, there is the option for a heated steering wheel and heated seats. Thanks to the electric engine, you will notice how quiet your drive will be, as well.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Offers multiple charging options, reducing your risk of being stuck with no charge.
  • Inbuilt navigation system included as a standard feature.
  • Impressive range, optimal for urban, stop/start traffic. Also uses recuperation to utilise kinetic energy and increase range further.
  • Comfortable to drive.

Cons

  • Not as suitable for longer journeys with no pit stops.
  • Though sufficient, payload is not as impressive as some other vans.
  • Higher upfront cost, though this will equate to the same cost as the diesel alternative after four years of ownership.

The Verdict

If you’re looking for a van with more consideration for the environment, without sacrificing the benefits of the standard fuel powered van, then the MAN eTGE van could be what you’re looking for.

With a number of bodies available and each of these possessing a sufficient payload, there is an eTGE to suit your needs. Perfect for those making plenty of deliveries, trade workers and people operating mobile workshops, the eTGE has an impressive range for urban driving and plenty of charging options – including with a standard 230 V socket – so you can rest assured you won’t be left stranded anywhere just because you can’t find a charging station.

If you do find yourself desperately looking for a charging station, the MAN eTGE will find one for you, thanks to the onboard navigation system included in all eTGE vans. This is just one of the many ways in which the cabin space is innovative and convenient, with all controls being clear and practically located.
