Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Luton Review

The eSprinter Luton at a glance

There’s no denying that electric technology is rapidly advancing. In fact, electric cars are well on their way to becoming the dominant force in vehicle power. Certainly, before long the roads will be a lot more quiet. Despite what you might think about these vehicles, they are the future and will continue to progress until the combustion engine is only a distant memory or a story you tell to your grandchildren.

There are of course a few major challenges we need to fix before we can truly say that the electric era is here. The small matter of charging is certainly one of these challenges but in recent years we have started to wrap our heads around this issue. Fast charging is becoming more and more popular and can see a vehicle make up to 50% of its charge in just a few hours.

The advancements don’t just stop there though. There are charging points popping up all across the country and before long it will be more unusual not to see one at a petrol station. So, the infrastructure is unquestionably improving but are the vehicles?

With a short drive in the Mercedes eSprinter you will certainly be on team ‘E’. The technology is unrecognisably better in this van than the electric vehicles of five years ago. This vehicle is capable, reliable and the future of large payload vans.

Engines and Spec

There’s no prizes on offer for knowing that the eSpinter is electric. So, we’re not going to rattle off a long list of engine sizes, fuel types, or any other combustion engine buzz words. Instead, we’re only going to talk about the important things. Power, capability, and range.

With an electric vehicle, the motor does all of the work and with the power feeding it from a series of large batteries these motors can perform at an outstanding level. Certainly a petrol engine the same size as the electric motor in the eSprinter would barely be able to move this large van let alone get it up to the speeds the all new electric motor can.

Granted, the new eSpirnter doesn’t quite match the petrol alternative for motorway cruising speeds. Electric motors are famous for torque which means the off the line speed of these vans really is incredible and they can tow large weights even with a full payload at the back.

Interior

As you might expect from a modern vehicle, the interior of the all new eSprinter Luton is quite frankly impeccable. The cab is laden with smooth lines and impressive storage spaces all while being unquestionably one of the comfiest vans on the market. Put it this way, your morning drive to the site will be a totally new experience.

The driving position of the eSprinter is unquestionably one the most enjoyable and comfortable on the market today. The visibility is brilliant and it provides both a safe and practical view of the road ahead. As for the rear cab you’ll have plenty of space and even more so because of the Luton configuration.

The eSprinter is certainly set up for practical use, however. So, it’s not the flashy leather interior you might see on some of the smaller electric van models. Some might say that this is a weakness though you’ll likely be using a van like this for big jobs and you’ll need it to be robust and capable. Certainly with the eSprinter you’ll get that and much much more besides.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Smooth drive
  • Comfortable driving position
  • Large load capacity

Cons

  • Fairly expensive
  • Low range
  • Minimal technology in interior

The Verdict

Electric vans are the future and in a few decades time it’ll be more rare to see a petrol model than a fully electric version. So, the technology is improving and with Mercedes latest eSprinter model that technology is on full show. The van is exceedingly capable and will stand you in good stead if you need to move large payloads around often. The eSpirinter is unquestionably one of the best large vans you could choose if you live in the city and need to have a van that can nip around city roads on a day-to-day basis.

However, the best thing about all of this is just how much you’ll be contributing to a combined effort to save the planet. Climate change is sweeping through the world and every little step we do to help our world will go a huge way to safeguarding our blue planet for years to come.
