Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper vs Volkswagen E-Crafter Tipper

April 20th, 2023

When searching for a new van, it’s easy to fixate on appearance and practicality. There’s no denying that these are important features, but the practical and aesthetic characteristics of a commercial van are far from the only elements worth noting.

As our understanding of sustainability, environmental preservation and climate change deepens, the efficiency and carbon footprint of a vehicle must also be considered. Fortunately, technological advancements and engineering have come on leaps and bounds in the last decade. Sure, all-electric cars and lithium-ion power may sound like the works of science-fiction, but they’re very real. What’s more, they could help you save money and better your business.

Those searching for the newest addition to their commercial fleet or, indeed, an upgrade on their current van should certainly consider a tipper model. With unparalleled functionality, this style of commercial vehicle is favoured by professionals across a range of industries. From landscapers and removal specialists to construction workers and roadside service providers, the tipper offers a payload, practicality and storage space in abundance.

Choosing your next van is no small task, but we’re here to help. Read on to discover our van vs van review of the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper and the Volkswagen E-Crafter Tipper.

Engines and Spec

In no particular order, we thought we’d kick things off with the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper. Since the Sprinter range was first introduced in the mid 1990s, Mercedes’ best loved vans have earned a reputation for excellence; it’s safe to say the eSprinter Tipper is no exception.

Regarding battery and power, those considering the eSprinter Tipper are faced with a choice between 41kWh or 55kWh capacity. With a maximum range of 100km, it’s fair to say that range isn’t the eSprinter’s forte, but it isn’t meant to be. Mercedes-Benz have designed the eSPrinter with two things in mind: efficiency and sustainability. This van is perfectly suited to shorter trips and urban driving.

It’s also worth noting that, although the eSprinter’s range isn’t breaking any records, a super swift charge time makes up for this.  Capable of reaching 80% charge in as little as two hours at home and 30 minutes when using a fast-charge point! This speed is certainly a redeeming factor.

There’s no denying that the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper is a nimble and capable vehicle, great for transporting loads from site to site. That said, the Volkswagen E-Crafter Tipper is just as impressive.

The Volkswagen E-Crafter Tipper features a modest 35kWh battery pack hooked up to a 134bhp motor. This is enough to provide plenty of instant torque and equates to around 107 miles of range on a single charge, almost double the range of the eSprinter. What’s more, as this battery and motor combination are situated below the floor of the cab, the E-Crafter Tipper benefits from an incredibly stable centre of gravity.

Regarding charge times, the E-Crafter’s battery can be brought up to 80% in around 45 minutes but will take longer using a standard wall-mounted power pack.

Interior

With a clearer understanding of each van’s battery, motor, drivability and range, let’s take a look inside their cabs.

As expected, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter exhibits the infamous sense of quality and style that is synonymous with the manufacturer. With a host of storage features, spacious 3-person seating and a plethora of tech upgrades available, there is certainly a model to suit each and every requirement. As standard, drivers can expect an infotainment system, geocoded mapping and voice control features.

On the other hand, the Volkswagen E-Crafter Tipper is favoured for its equally spacious cab layout, foldable central storage/seating and a range of comfort features. Well-designed extras such as automatic air conditioning and heated seats make this van a great choice all year round. Of course, the E-Crafter is still equipped with all the entertainment kit you’d expect, including Satellite Navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and radio.

The Verdict

There you have it, two mightily impressive electric tippers placed head to head. Both vans are jam packed with useful features and perfectly practical tipper functionality. That said, if you were hoping for a straight answer as to which is better, we’re sorry to disappoint.

Both of these tipper vans are excellent in their own ways. Those looking for a little extra range may find the Volkswagen E-Crafter Tipper is their cup of tea. Alternatively, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper might just come out on top regarding in-cab comfort.
