Engines and Spec

For the first time in a small Nissan van of this sort, there is no diesel engine option.

Instead, if you want a combustion-powered Townstar, you will need the 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit that puts out 130PS and 240Nm of torque. The alternative is the full-electric Townstar, which has a 44kWh battery powered by an electric motor producing 122PS and 245Nm of torque.

Connected up to a 75kW DC rapid charger, the Townstar’s battery will charge from 0-80 per cent in just over 40 minutes.

That’s a little longer than the 30 minutes it took the old e-NV200 to charge to the same level, but the Townstar features a larger battery. The van also supports both 11kW and 22kW AC charging, although the latter system is optional.

When fully charged, the van can offer up to 183 miles of range which is around 50% more than the Nissan eNV200. The Townstar’s electric motor has also been swapped for a more powerful 120bhp unit, compared with the 107bhp model in its predecessor.

When it comes to carrying capacity, the Townstar’s 4.3-cubic metre load bay has enough space for two Euro Pallets. Both the petrol and electric versions of the van can carry a maximum payload of 800kg (600kg in SWB guise) and tow a trailer weighing up to 1,500kg.

Electric Townstar customers also get to enjoy the ProPilot advanced driver assistance system. This allows the vehicle to automatically slow to a full stop and then accelerate away.

Interior

The interior and safety equipment of the Nissan Townstair has seen several improvements since its predecessor.

Some of the improvements include Intelligent Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. There’s also Junction Assist and a new Hands-Free Parking system.

There’s a 360-degree camera system providing you with an overhead view of the surrounding area for safer low-speed manoeuvres. Radar systems allow the Townstar Electric to have an Intelligent Cruise Control system too.

As for infotainment, the Nissan Townstar boasts an 8-inch touchscreen, linked to a 10-inch digital display for the instrument cluster. There’s also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as wireless phone charging.
