June 13th, 2022

When browsing for a new or used van, it can be difficult to find out the right choice for you. You may be confused by some of the different terms that are thrown around, such as the various types of van available to you. Flatbed, pick-up, panel, Luton, tipper, dropside and combi are all types you might run into when you’re browsing.

Two of these, panel and Luton, are very popular choices for new van drivers. But what is the difference between these two models and which is right for you? Read on to find out today.

What Is A Panel Van?

Even if you don’t know the proper name for it, you would have seen a panel van driving around, as they’re typically the most common type of van you’ll see on a road. They are called panel vans because they are mostly made up of solid panels, with the only windows being the windscreen and those of the driver and passenger.

They normally have good load space, accessed by a sliding side door and rear doors. You can buy panel vans in a range of sizes, depending on how much you need to carry in the back. A panel van is small and light, perfect for making quick deliveries and getting between destinations quickly.

What Is A Luton Van?

Luton vans are great for maximising space, as instead of sacrificing space for wheel arches, they are higher off the ground so are not impacted by them. They also may have a loading platform installed to help easily load things onto the slightly higher vehicles. Luton vans are made of a thin shell of reinforced plastic or fibreglass, making them much lighter than other types of vans.

A Luton van also maximises the area above the driver and passenger cab. This can be used for additional storage. Some Luton vans have done away with this feature, instead of rounding off this area to make the van more aerodynamic. It is quite similar to a box van, but a box van does not go above the cab.

They are a popular choice for delivery companies and removal businesses as they can store a lot of packages/possessions while also being lightweight and easy to access.
