Renault Trafic vs Renault Trafic Z.E. Electric

January 24th, 2023

Diesel vs electric is a common debate in contemporary discourse on van models. Diesel vans boost powerful engines capable of copying with heavy payloads and make up the majority of vans on UK roads. However, electric vans are often a cost-effective and environmentally-conscious option, and have surged in popularity in recent years. While there are benefits to both, you need to weigh up which option would be most beneficial for your business.

Today we’ll be discussing the Renault Trafic Van and comparing it with its electric counterpart, the Renault Trafic Z.E.

Joining models such as the Master Z.E. and the Kangoo Z.E., the Renault Trafic Z.E. is the final van introduction to complete Renault’s electrification of their LCV range. Featuring the same degree of features, diversity and customisation as the classic Renault Trafic, this van retains the practicality levels of a standard ICE van while offering all the benefits of an electric vehicle.

However, it’s worth noting that the Renault Trafic Van still remains an impressive vehicle – it has recently been upgraded to feature a more fuel-efficient engine and a stylish, comfortable and quiet interior.

If you’re curious about whether to stick with diesel or switch to electric, read on to find out which model is best suited to you and your business.

Engines and Spec

The engine is, of course, the primary difference between the Renault Trafic Van and Trafic Z.E. Its latest upgrade has witnessed the Renault Trafic’s core 2.0-litre diesel engine become available with four outputs, rather than three. They produce 109bhp, 129bhp, 148bhp and 167bhp, and are labelled the dCi 110, dCi 130, dCi 150 and dCi 170 respectively. This is more fuel efficient than previous designs. The Renault Trafic is the perfect ride for bumpy roads and has purposeful steering, making it greatly improved over previous versions and on par with rivals. The suspension is geared towards load-carrying over comfortability, however, it doesn’t feel too bouncy when unladen, making the Renault Trafic pretty smooth on long runs. You’ll also be able to enjoy a quieter drive – the 2.0-litre diesel engine is nicely refined and quiet enough at all speeds.

Alternatively, the Renault Trafic Z.E. uses a fully electric 90kW motor, resulting in an approximate driving range of 149 miles. This designates it as one of the top 10 best driving ranges of current electric vans on the market – you’ll be able to complete your daily tasks without running out of charge. You’ll also find handy features for loading and unloading – the Renault Trafic Z.E. has a single sliding door on one side (though it is optional to have one on both sides), as well as double-opening back doors. This is especially useful for those who make frequent deliveries with a range of different-sized items.

Interior

As mentioned in our previous review of the Renault Trafic Van, this popular model recently received a major upgrade to its interior and safety equipment. Retaining its position as one of the most spacious mid-sized vans on the market, this vehicle now feels more like a passenger car than ever before. Its revised dashboard features a brushed silver trim, an uncluttered layout and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen – you’ll also find a wireless phone charger, three USB ports and a 4.2-inch colour display as well as Bluetooth and DAB. With a range of features that cater to individual requirements, this stylish and practical update guarantees you a comfortable drive.

The Renault Trafic Z.E. features a similar interior – with a sleek, polished and angular design that is both practical and attractive. You’ll be able to enjoy the same features as Renault Trafic – an eight-inch touchscreen with DAB radio and BlueTooth included as standard, allowing for hands-free communication, navigation and music playback. It also includes Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto connectivity. The Z.E. provides plenty of storage space, with an extremely generous 84 litres of storage space available throughout the cabin, being located as pockets in the doors and storage compartments within the dashboard – many of which are conveniently covered for discretion.

The Verdict

Both of these vans are reliable options and among the most popular models on offer. With its fuel-efficient engine and a stylish, comfortable and quiet interior, the Renault Trafic Van is a nifty contender against its more expensive competitors. In comparison, the Renault Trafic Z.E. is a great pick for its impressive driving range and excellent loading space capacity – you’ll be able to drive safely in the knowledge your vehicle will be having less of a negative impact on the environment. As with all electric vehicles, you’ll have to keep in mind the charging constraints that come with this model. There’s also only one battery option, whilst some competitors offer two. Despite this, with its combination of style, comfort and practicality, the Renault Trafic Z.E. remains a truly versatile van.
