Vehicle Review: Renault Kangoo Z.E.
First released in 2011, the Renault Kangoo ZE was the first full-production electric van and is still today one of the most practical and popular choices of electric van on the market. The Renault Kangoo Z.E. is a variant of the regular petrol and diesel-powered Kangoo 2008 van, and it has quickly become one of the go-to electric light commercial vehicles around, proudly settling as one of the best-selling electric vans of today. In fact, the ZE model currently accounts for over 60% of all Kangoos sold.
With the ban on non-electric vehicles across the UK fast approaching, more drivers and businesses are looking to make the big switch from petrol and diesel to electric – but knowing where to start can be difficult.
If you’re looking for a small electric van, here’s why we think you’ll love the Renault Kangoo ZE.
Renault Kangoo ZE driving range
One of the most important factors to consider when selecting an electric van is how far you can go between charges. No one wants to get caught short – and with a Kangoo ZE, the driving range varies depending on model year. While the original Kangoo ZE reached up to 106 miles per charge, those built following the 2017 update can reach up to 170 miles per charge. This is because they have a bigger battery pack and a new R60 electric motor.
Cargo space and payload
The batteries are fitted below the load floor, meaning drivers can enjoy the same amount of cargo space as the petrol or diesel-powered version. However, it’s important to note that – just like other small electric van rivals – the batteries do add some weight to the basic van, so the ZE’s 640kg maximum payload rating is lower than other models.
Available in a choice of two body lengths (standard and maxi), the ZE’s load volume ranges from 3.0 to 4.6 cubic metres. There’s decent capacity inside, especially if you opt for the Renault Kangoo ZE Maxi. It’s also available as a Crew van as well as a panel van, and with a wide choice of body styles available, it’s arguably more versatile than its rivals.
Charging a Renault Kangoo Electric
The Kangoo ZE can be charged wherever you like – whether it’s at home, at work or at a public charging point (this can easily be located using an onboard R-link navigation system). In recent years, the electrical system of the Kangoo ZE has been upgraded to allow fast-charging from a single-phase 7kW charger; this can be installed on the wall of your house or garage and will charge your Kangoo ZE while you sleep – pretty convenient. It takes six hours to fully charge the battery, but a quick one-hour recharge will give you 22 miles.
If you charge using a regular 3-pin power supply, you can expect charging to take longer – an estimated 18-20 hours to fully charge a flat battery, to be exact.
