What Are Zero-Emission Vehicles And Why Should I Get One?

August 9th, 2023

The climate crisis has been accelerating for many years now and the issue is one of the largest that has ever faced the human race. While many experts have criticised governments and leading organisations for their slow response to the issue there are now a series of changes that are being introduced. The fact is that we must act now to stand any realistic chance of saving the planet and safeguarding our world for future generations. To fight this new threat of climate change we need to change a lot of how we act in our day-to-day lives and one of the key areas is transport.

One of the largest issues when it comes to transport are, of course, petrol and diesel vehicles. Fossil fuels pump out vast amounts of damaging fumes and greenhouse gases into our atmosphere which is one of the leading causes of climate change. So, how do we fix this? The answer to this question is unequivocally simple. Replace combustion engines with zero-emission alternatives. Over the past few decades, many of the world’s brightest minds have been on the path to developing effective zero-emission alternatives. Now there are a few legitimate power options for the environmentally conscious to choose from.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

While electric cars are unquestionably the most popular zero-emission alternatives there are a few alternatives. The most prominent and well-researched alternative on the market is unquestionably hydrogen. Hydrogen fuel cells, while being slightly more complex than electric motors, are equally as effective when it comes to producing a zero-emission vehicle. Essentially the cars work using compressed hydrogen gas which is passed into a fuel cell. Instead of this fuel cell combusting the gas it transfers the chemical energy into electrical energy which then powers a motor. This option is incredibly effective and some even argue that the option is far better than purely electric battery-run cars.

There are a great deal of hydrogen fuel cell cars on the market today and many of them have been purchased in the UK. The Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo are two examples of major international car manufacturers using the technology to power their own cars. Both the Mirai and Nexo are fairly popular in the UK and despite the infrastructure for hydrogen fuel being slightly less developed than their electric counterpart they still maintain a great deal of support around the world. So, hydrogen is certainly a perfectly valid option for your new vehicle and you should seriously consider this as your new option. So, what about electric cars?

Electric vehicles

Electric power is, of course, the grandfather when it comes to renewable energy. In fact, we have known about the environmental benefits of electric power for some time and there are a wide variety of electric cars on the market. This has meant that over the years we have built up an impressive amount of infrastructure around electric cars, vans and larger vehicles so people can recharge all across the country. So, nowadays it is far easier than ever before to win an electric vehicle (EV) in the UK. So, what EVs are available and why are they good for the environment? Well, in this next section, we will talk through these different areas and help you to understand why EVs are the way to go.

Fossil fuels are unquestionably suffocating the planet. Fumes that are released by burning fuels such as petrol and diesel are called greenhouse gases. These gases are extremely damaging to the environment as the greenhouse effect essentially means that they cannot escape from the atmosphere. This causes heat which is brought by the sun to remain trapped in our atmosphere which, as you might expect, heats up the temperature. This drastic increase in global temperatures has meant that the finally balanced equilibrium of the world’s ecosystems has been thrown off course and we now have an uphill battle to get it back on track.

How can electric vehicles help the environment?

Remember those greenhouse gases we were talking about? Well, to put it simply EVs and other zero-emission vehicles don’t produce any of these which as you might expect is a huge plus for the planet. Essentially this means that transporting people over large distances with these vehicles will not pump any harmful gases into the atmosphere. So, if enough people switch to this kind of transport then we stand a very real chance of slowing the degenerative effects of our planet’s warming down. It is clear then that modern EVs are the future of transportation as they maintain the convenience of traditional cars while moving the industry forward with more efficient energy sources.

The future of electric power

So, as we have discussed electric power has been around for some time but there is no doubt that the future of this energy source is bright. As we move to a more sustainable ethos with power, there is a very real chance that soon enough we’ll all be living in a scenario whereby our power comes from 100% renewable sources. Whether this be solar energy, wind power, or tidal machines our attitude toward power is changing. This also transfers into our vehicular industry and many experts firmly believe that we will be using zero-emission vehicles as our primary vehicle choice very soon indeed.

How to choose the right EV for you

The fact is that EV power in cars and vans is still fairly new and we must consider the fact that not every vehicle is perfect. As with any new technology things are constantly evolving in the industry and new more efficient ways of creating things are always developing. This can make choosing a vehicle difficult at the moment and you should consider a wide variety of options before you make your mind up. Some of the key considerations to make are the range of the car or van in question as well as the technology on board and the safety features that they have.

Why should you get an EV?

As we have mentioned, electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular in the 21st century. In fact, there is a very real chance that the next 20 to 30 years will be the last we see of internal combustion engines. Though, why should you invest in an EV now? Well, keep reading this section to find out more.

Great performance

While you may not instantly couple EVs with performance they are, in fact, some of the best-performing vehicles on the market today and that is for a few very clear reasons. The first reason is, of course, their modern features. Most EVs on the market today have been developed very recently which makes them the world’s leaders when it comes to all things vehicular technology. Whether this is suspension or handling these cars will have the most up-to-date technology available. The second, and perhaps most important reason is, of course, torque. Torque is the force that moves your car or van off the line and electric motors have this in abundance.

No emissions (environmentally friendly)

As we have already discussed, the lack of greenhouse gas emissions, when you drive an EV, is an incredible benefit. In fact, we’re sure it’s not a surprise to you that this is one of the main reasons for most people choosing this kind of vehicle. When you drive through your local town or depart on your annual holiday you will not feel guilty about burning fossil fuels or releasing harmful gases as there will be none to be seen! So, doing your bit to save the planet is a brilliant reason to choose an EV as your next vehicle.

Beneficial to company image

Maintaining an environmentally friendly company image is, as you might expect, one of the most vital marketing strategies of the modern world. Now driving around a fleet of petrol-diesel vans certainly won’t do this reputation any good which is why you should seriously consider switching to electric.
