Tipper: Citroen E-Relay vs Maxus E Deliver 9

March 31st, 2023

Why would you need a tipper van? Well, a tipper is a seriously great choice for any commercial jobs that require the hauling and unloading of heavy materials.

It’s versatile, practical and commonly used for transporting and unloading loose materials such as sand, gravel, dirt, or construction waste. Equipped with a hydraulic system that tips (hence the name) the front end of the cargo bed, it also allows the contents to be deposited onto the ground or into a receptacle. This makes it a popular choice for many construction workers, tradespeople or business owners.

The Citroen E-Relay is the electric version of a popular van available in the tipper variation whereas the Maxus Deliver 9 is a fairly new vehicle, only starting production in 2019 with electric following not long afterwards. This blog compares the Citroen E-Relay Tipper and Maxus E Deliver 9 in an effort to find out more about each vehicle and help you see which van can best meet your commercial needs. Read on to learn more about these two excellent vans, both available at Van Sales UK.

Engines and Spec

The main thing you expect from a tipper van is for it to have a great payload, perfect for carrying high volume and weight capacity if required. The Maxus E Deliver 9 is a great option if you’re looking for a high payload, capable of carrying an impressive payload of just under 1500kg. The Citroen E-Relay’s maximum payload of 1,150kg is a little less than the E Deliver, however both vans are comfortable with carrying heavy materials which is really the main thing that is required of a tipper.

As well as the payload, the E Deliver 9 boasts powerful capabilities. There are three battery packs available (52, 72 and 89kWh) and with these, you can expect 310 Nm of torque and a maximum range of about 219 miles per charge on the largest battery option. Find out more about the performance here in our full review.

By comparison, the E-Relay is powered by an electric motor that produces 121 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque, making it feel responsive with zippy acceleration. There is impressive versatility in the options available in battery size and range, with either a 37 kWh or 70 kWh battery. This means a battery range of up to 73 or 139 miles on a single charge. The charging time for the battery is around 5.5 hours for the smaller battery, and up to 11 hours for the larger one.

Interior

On the inside, both vans look great and have a variety of modern features. The interior of the E-Relay includes a 5-inch colour touchscreen display, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and electrically adjustable heated mirrors. It also has a range of safety features, including lane departure warning, a speed limiter, and hill-start assist.  The tipper mechanism is operated by a control panel mounted in the cab, which allows the driver to raise and lower the bed of the vehicle with ease. If you’re interested in learning more about some of these features, read our detailed full review of the Citroen E-Relay here.

Sleek and stylish, the E Deliver 9 is  finished with black plastic and a chrome-effect display. The cabin is comfortable and easy to operate, with an infotainment touchscreen monitor that has great smartphone connectivity options. It also has great features equipped as standard, such as blind spot assist, automatic climate control, traffic sign recognition and much more.

The Verdict

Overall it’s a tough choice, as both the Citroen E-Relay Tipper and the Maxus E Deliver 9 Tipper are two great electric vehicles with loads of potential for commercial use. Both vans are powerful with impressive payloads that will certainly move materials from A to B. What’s more, both have a long-lasting battery range, and are packed with useful additional features that suit them as a Tipper variant. For some, the E Deliver 9 extra payload will make it preferable but others will defer to the better known Citroen brand and to the E-Relay’s focus on practicality and function.
